Boats and Sunshine

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Tuesday June 2nd

Well I think that’s the first time I’ve been able to walk to work with no jumper or Jacket in Ireland so far.  After work I took a long walk through the city to Luis and Albertos place.  I stopped off at HMV though to play Metallica Guitar Hero for a while. OK OK I also took my time walking along the docks, there was an old boat left set up from the maritime festival.  There’s a bridge that has been delivered butnot yet put in place, that’s fascinating.  Also it was a stunning warm day with blue skies.

We had a party at Albertos because he was leaving for Manchester.   We ordered pizza sat in the sun and chatted.  Played Wii for a while too.

Wednesday June 3rd

Got woken up at 6am because it’s so hot….. IN IRELAND!! I’m still in shock by the weather change, but enjoying every sunny minute of it.  I found out the PHPNW conference will be in Manchester in October, I’d really like to try and go. Made good progress on my project today. Swapped out some ajaxy stuff for jquery stuff on another task too! first time using jquery.

Don’t think I can resist the ice creams put in freezer at work cuz it’s so sunny and gorgeous and ice cream weather!

Thursday June 4th

Fixing bugs, hacking on PHP & JavaScript goodies, the usual.  Went for a walk along the canals, plenty of sunshine and ducks.  Exactly four weeks now until I’m on the plane to Canaries for GUADEC 2009 Heading to HMV after work to play Metallica Guitar Hero for a while then decide what to spend vouchers I won on … hrmn.. :D Bought little kings for Wii, Burn after reading, Slumdog millionaire, Twilight and Casino Royale at HMV. Planned groceries for weekend. Cracking open my new game, hope it’s going to be fun! :D  I’m now King Jaime and I got a workplace.

Friday June 5th

OK back to normal Irish weather grey sky, light rains, prediction for the next four days is the same.  I went outside for some moments of sun at lunchtime and I played frisbee with some of the guys.  Our company launched a new site bedandbreakfastworld.com it’s very pretty.    We went out for beers to celebrate.  A bunch of ex employees were there too so it was a great chance to catch up with everyone.   Had a pretty awesome night, went out with some sales people to work after drinks at the Barge for Chinese food, fun fun.

Saturday June 6th

I had to just pretend I didn’t have a hangover.   I played Okami.   We adventured out into the wild weather to stock up our fridge for the week. Bit miserable with the wet rain and wind. Can’t wait for GUADEC.  smoked salmon, chive and new potato tartlets with salad, desert is blackberries, strawberries, mango and cream.

Sunday June 7th

Glad that there’s alright weather outside, heading to my card making class shortly and want to go for a run this evening 3.5 miles.    Heading out to play with glitter, pretty paper, shiny things and sticky glue! I did Jackies Sunday craft class on pearse street. Simmering a pot of Indian butter chicken with butternut pumpkin. serving with basmati rice and fresh coriander.

Navy Spring Nights

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Monday April 20th A gorgeous sunny spring morning. I was up early and took a little time to take photographs in St Stephens Green.
TulipsSt Stephens Green
The big news of today was that Sun bought Oracle for 9.50 a share. As Jan works there this news effects us, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with this over the next few months. At lunch time I went for a walk along the canals and enjoyed the sun. I took pictures of little clusters of tiny daisies growing in the grass.
Daisies
I was thrilled to find on my walk home the park was filled with happy picknickers lazing in the sun. I watched some old Italian guys attempting to take pictures of pretty girls sun bathing, probably to take home to show their mates. We cooked a yummy chicken stir fry and discussed what to do next for Ginger Robot, Jan worked on a design while I did some Sys Admin for it. A very productive night.
Spring St Stephens Green

Tuesday April 21st
After work I went for a drink with Laura at the Ely bar on the Canals. We discussed the next OSSBarcamp, and what we’d like to change this time. For one I’m going to add a registration module, rather than using blog comments, maybe some threaded commenting to encourage discussion too. The afternoon was just beautiful and I sipped my Champagne out on the terrace in the sun. Some other girls joined us and we wore sunglasses and enjoyed the view across the water.

Canals

We continued on in the restaurant next door, for the Ireland Girl Geek Dinner. I got to meet some new people this time and had some great food and wine. Amanda Scott gave a talk about taking charge of our careers, getting us to plan the next step we want to take and an action item as soon as this week. mine is to learn more about Django to work on my next open source project. Martha showed off her Roombas, talking about the educational value of owning one as well. Luis and I caught the last train home. As I walked home I noted the beautiful scenery ‘Large beautiful cherry blossoms on a clear navy spring night but add to the images of the future in my thoughts.’.

Wednesday April 22nd
Again a gorgeous day, I stopped while in the green just to take in the view, enjoying the colours of spring and the silence from the traffic outside. I am worried that so many people have commented that this is our summer. After work I wandered up Grafton street, I was curious why there were hundreds of people lined up, I assumed a football match had special tickets for sale. I found out later that they all were there to hand in their resumes for jobs at Londis, a common convenience store here in Ireland.

That night I booked all our accommodation for our trip to Scotland in August. I’ve booked mainly hostels, including a haunted castle where Jan and I will have to sleep in separate dorms, SPOOKY. It’s going to ROCK. I’m looking forward to the Isle of Skye and our hostel that’s walking distance from Loch Ness. Let alone being able to pick some more Fringe shows back in Edinburgh with Miki and James.

Thursday April 23rd
I joined my workmates over at the Barge for a farewell for one of our workmates heading to South America. We discussed her trip and I can’t wait to do the same thing myself some day, maybe 2011 for my 30th. Some girls joined our group early in the night and wanted to do a demonstration of the makeup line they were trying to sell. Most of the girls jumped up and moved out of the room leaving the girls to sell to a group of mostly guys, they even suggested breaking the eye pencil in half to split costs and that the guys might want some bronzer! We ran out of beer before we ran out of daylight, so I had a safe enough walk home. A saxophonist was playing jazz as I walked up Grafton Street. I walked through some low lying mist towards home but could spot the dark navy sky above me.

Friday April 24th
A miserable day with plenty of rain and fog. I upgraded my laptop to Jaunty Ubuntu 9.04. I edited pictures of New York and got an order in ready for my next scrapbook. I signed Jan and I both up for a 5 mile run in July held in Pheonix Park. We have a lot of work to do to be fit enough for that.

Saturday April 25th - ANZAC Day 2009
Jan and I jumped up early and went for a run. This is very unusual for us, but we had fun though Jan finds my pace a little slow. We went to the Woolshed who’d promised an ANZAC day tribute, but unfortunately they delayed it until more people would fill the bar. Instead we had our own minute of silence remembering those lost to the pointlessness of war. We did enjoy some Australian treats as well, a lamington and a Coopers Beer, I bought some Cheezels for later.
Cheezels

Jan and I went shoe shopping, hoping to find us both some new sneakers for our jogging sessions. Jan found some cool Nike airs and a pair of summer sandles for GUADEC on the Canary Islands. I found nothing. All the womens shoes seemed to be for show rather than practice. I just want the same as Jan found, but black and in my size. One shop only had shoes that went up to size 5 womens! I’m a size 6, who knew that was so large.
Cheezels Me eating Cheezels THE RIGHT WAY! :D

We met up with the group celebrating the release of Ubuntu Jaunty at Jimmy Chungs restaurant where we ate some yummy things including mango pudding. Later we crossed the road to Messr McGuire’s for the official launch party. Quite a few people showed up and we had a really chilled afternoon. We looked at the sunny day outside, over the Liffey. We had a few pints, and many laughs with everyone. I won third prize in a quiz about Ubuntu, but unfortunately the cool brown shirt was far too big for me to ever wear it so I gave it away.

Maciej
I love this image of Maciej marking our papers with the great features of the pub behind him.
There’s some more great pictures in Lauras Jaunty Release Party Collection

It was only 8pm, still daylight, and unfortunately our night was nearly ruined when a severely drunk guy decided to urinate all over the floor of the train carriage then walked up and down the aisle waving his penis around. Luckily he decided to do this moments before our stop and we (and everyone else on the carriage) jumped off, and security were making their way up the platform.

We spent our night relaxing, watching TV, we’ve found The Big Bang Theory which is fantastic, it’s about a group of academics who hang out in a share apartment in California, many nerdy jokes, and situations we’ve found ourselves in at times.

Sunday April 25th
Today we got so much done. Although we started slow with popcorn and TV and relaxing. Our weeks groceries were delivered and we cooked for the whole week. I made some ANZAC biscuits, Jan made salmon tartlets, a lemon chicken and new potato bake, and some white wine and shallot chicken to have on salads later in the week. OOOH yum it’s all delicious and so healthy, our fridge is also now filled with colourful salad veges ready to finish making all these meals. YUM.

Later in the afternoon Jan and I went jogging again, this time doing an extra interval on a slightly longer path. I was envious of Jan having new shoes though, can’t wait to find mine. On the final stretch we noticed the Kilbarrack shops has a new gym that has opened, it turns out they’ve got a great deal where we can just pay for 7 days at a time, and not pay if we’re not going to be there! That is amazing. We both want to sign up soon, I can’t wait to use the exercise bikes.

I’m so proud of us going for these jogs, we started slow so should be able to keep it up and make it to the race in July fit and ready! I think the gym is a sign.

Friday April 10th - Washington DC

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Friday April 10th

This morning we headed straight to the Botanical Gardens. Washington is already covered in gorgeous spring time flowers as well as the lovely Cherry blossom trees that seemed to be everywhere. The Botanical Gardens were still a treat. Rooms of beautiful flowers of many species, Some rooms were set up more like rain forrests with water spraying for the ceiling at intervals. The building is bright like large green houses joined together. I loved seeing a tiny pineapple growing. Jan and I were experimenting taking macro pictures. It was hot enough in there to just wear tshirts. The many Orchids were stunning too.

We continued across the mall, past some protesters about Taiwan, to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. This huge museum is filled with air craft, space craft and science about planets and such.
Space Ships
Well we saw one of the backup command modules for the moon landing. Lots of planes, including the spirit of Saint Louis. I absolutely loved the satellites. We saw a model of the mars rover, I was surprised how big it was. We even touched some moon rock on our way out. There’s a huge fast food outlet at the air and space museum where we had lunch, sharing rasberry fizzy drink too.

We made our way up to the front of the White House. It was pretty cool, I wondered why there was no traffic down there and why there were so many police officers. I noticed a protest but we doubt that was why as the Anti Nuclear protest had been there since the 1980s. We walked around the blocks, and at the back we saw people setting up for the easter egg hunt among the gorgeous spring trees.
White HouseBack of white house
We walked home via the Treasury, and we stopped in at a white house store at a shopping center and bought some souvenirs. Back at Union Square we grabbed a bunch of sushi which we ate back in our room. We finished up the night sharing some space ice cream for desert.

Andrea Bocelli

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

We had a giggle on the way home last night, when we saw this in Totally Dublin magazine.
Andrea Bocelli
From Wikipedia about Andrea Bocelli - “He has sold over 65 million albums worldwide thus far making him the biggest selling tenor of all time, and the biggest selling classical soloist of all time (even bigger than Pavarotti).”

Anyway, this magazine kept us entertained on the way home last night AND it helped us decide we’ll go see Ben Lee at the Sugar Club next Sunday night.

Farewell with a flumotion branded truck

Work feels so different now with the small changes and people leaving, We had goodbye drinks for Colin. I won quake with a handy cap of 90. We caught up with ex-work friends a couple of times, we borrowed Wim’s car for the weekend and I showed plenty of people my USA scrapbook. We put down the deposit for the temporary<br /> <style> @page { size: 8.27in 11.69in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --></style> <p>accommodation we’ll take until we leave. Jan’s paperwork is on it’s way to being submitted for his greencard. We had drinks with some friends on Friday night though I wasn’t that into it. I bought some exciting tickets and planned some stuff for when Georgie is here. I started feeling the emotions related to leaving a country where we have so many good friends and the stress that comes with relocating.</p> <div align="left" />When I arrived in Spain, this time in July in 2005, I was just in time to go on a work catamaran trip. There was a mixed group of people from the two companies, I worked for one and Jan worked for the other. I considered this my welcome to Barcelona party and it really was a nice way to start our stay. Two years have gone by and this week is my last week working here. On Saturday we went to the 24 hour motorbike race at Montmelo, we had VIP tickets for the Flumotion tent and ofcourse I consider this my goodbye event.</p> <div align="left">There was a truck with the flumotion logo on it! tshirts, bikes and bikewear too. Free meals and an open bar made for an excellent time. We saw the bikes start their journey at 3pm then chilled near our sausagey tent in the shade of an umbrella. We played 500, chatted, ate wonderful steaks and drank too much cava, there was eurotrashy techno playing in the background though not loud enough to cover the zooming bikes. Andy and I grumbled at each other a bit as we started to lose the second round, though all is forgiven now. We sat in the stands for a while and enjoyed the sparks and lights that come as the bikes curl around that part of the track. We chilled in the crowd of unfamiliar workmates waiting for fireworks that never came then it was home time.</div> <p><img align="left" src="http://jaime.hemmett.org/photos/July2007/P1090577.thumb.jpg" /><img align="left" src="http://jaime.hemmett.org/photos/July2007/P1090576.thumb.jpg" /><img align="left" src="http://jaime.hemmett.org/photos/July2007/P1090565.thumb.jpg" /></p> <p><img src="http://jaime.hemmett.org/photos/July2007/P1090553.thumb.jpg" /><br /> We were in bed by about 3am after returning people, the car, walking then a train ride home. I was left feeling heartbroken because of the conflict and drunken depression - I cried myself to sleep - I realise I am way too attached to the people and our way of life here.</p> <p>Sunday Jan and I rode bicing bikes to the cinema where we watched ‘Transformers’. It’s hard to say if this movie is good or bad, I laughed, I enjoyed special effects, I also nearly fell asleep in parts and groaned plenty of times with frustration.</p> </div> <p class="postmetadata"> Posted in <a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/adventure" title="View all posts in Adventure" rel="category tag">Adventure</a>, <a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/moving-to-ireland" title="View all posts in Moving to Ireland" rel="category tag">Moving to Ireland</a> | <a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2007/07/farewell-with-a-flumotion-branded-truck#respond" title="Comment on Farewell with a flumotion branded truck">No Comments »</a></p> </div> <div class="post"> <h3 id="post-50"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2007/07/moving-to-ireland" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Moving to Ireland">Moving to Ireland</a></h3> <small>Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007</small> <div class="entry"> <p>In September Jan and I are leaving Spain and moving to Dublin, Ireland. Jan has a job organised and I’ll look for work after we arrive. At present we’ve both given notice to Fluendo, and we intend to arrive in Dublin in early September. Why Ireland? Well after deciding we were ready to escape Spain and that we weren’t quite ready to go back to Australia, we figured we’d look for somewhere English speaking in Europe. By coincidence someone mentioned a going job on an IRC channel that was perfect for Jan! We’ve never been to Dublin and it’s going to be quite a crazy adventure. At this stage we’re thinking about living there for 2.5 years, but we’re pretty flexible. Why leave Spain? It just hasn’t worked for us, we lived it large and had plenty of adventures, I can’t explain the reasons without complaining about something that isn’t quite it - like being robbed or problems because we’re obviously foreign. It is going to be really hard to leave the friends we’ve made - though we’re all travelling so much that I’m sure we’ll see each other again, one day. I already miss how it was when we first came, those first few months that built these strong relationships between us.</p> <p>Things I’ll miss from work: Jan and I being with each other 24/7, walking to work together, sharing home made lunches, discussing our day on the way home via the shops, Quake at 7pm. Waking up at 9:30 and getting to work at 11. Group giggling at dinosaur and inhouse made comics. My view across the city. 2 hour boozey lunches at paki or milano. Working with my friends (though some have left before me). Silly work people only jokes like wanting a pony. This ends in 10 days from now.</p> <p>Meanwhile there’s two months left to enjoy our last summer down this way, and there’s plenty going on!</p> </div> <p class="postmetadata"> Posted in <a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/moving-to-ireland" title="View all posts in Moving to Ireland" rel="category tag">Moving to Ireland</a> | <a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2007/07/moving-to-ireland#respond" title="Comment on Moving to Ireland">No Comments »</a></p> </div> <div class="navigation"> <div class="alignleft"></div> <div class="alignright"></div> </div> </div> <div id="sidebar"> <ul> <li id="text-431868021" class="widget widget_text"> <div class="textwidget"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/my-101-in-1001-days-list">101 in 1001 list</a></div> </li> <li id="recent-posts" class="widget widget_recent_entries"> <h2 class="widgettitle">Recent Posts</h2> <ul> <li><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2009/12/146kms-on-saturday-march-14th">14.6kms on Saturday March 14th </a></li> <li><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2009/11/dresden">Dresden </a></li> <li><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2009/10/excited">Excited </a></li> <li><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2009/07/the-week-we-ran-5-miles">The week we ran 5 miles </a></li> <li><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/2009/07/half-a-year-over">Half a year over </a></li> </ul> </li><li id="search" class="widget widget_search"><form method="get" id="searchform" action="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/"> <label class="hidden" for="s">Search for:</label> <div><input type="text" value="" name="s" id="s" /> <input type="submit" id="searchsubmit" value="Search" /> </div> </form> </li><li id="categories-238228032" class="widget widget_categories"><h2 class="widgettitle">Categories</h2> <ul> <li class="cat-item cat-item-1"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/adventure" title="These are writings about my adventures">Adventure</a> </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-4"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/geekiness" title="View all posts filed under Geekiness">Geekiness</a> </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-2"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/general" title="View all posts filed under General">General</a> </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-7"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/healthy" title="View all posts filed under Healthy">Healthy</a> </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-3 current-cat"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/moving-to-ireland" title="View all posts filed under Moving to Ireland">Moving to Ireland</a> </li> <li class="cat-item cat-item-6"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/category/geekiness/webdevphp" title="Posts about WebDevelopment/PHP">WebDevPHP</a> </li> </ul> </li> <li id="wpg2-sbar-grid" class="widget wpg2_widget_sidebargridblock_display"> <h2 class="widgettitle">Random Gallery Image:</h2> <div> <div class="wpg2sidebargrid-image"><a href="http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/v/LA2Bay07/YosemiteBassLake/P1080259.jpg.html" title="Wed 02 May 2007 19:51:50 EST"><img src="http://jaime.hemmett.org/gallery/d/2132-2/P1080259.jpg" width="188" height="250" class="giThumbnail" alt="Wed 02 May 2007 19:51:50 EST"/></a> </div> </div> </li> <li id="rss-238228031" class="widget widget_rss"><h2 class="widgettitle"><a class='rsswidget' href='http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/7403032.rss' title='Syndicate this content'><img style='background:orange;color:white;border:none;' width='14' height='14' src='http://jaime.hemmett.org/blog/wp-includes/images/rss.png' alt='RSS' /></a> <a class='rsswidget' href='http://twitter.com/jaimekristene' title='Twitter updates from Jaime Schmidt / jaimekristene.'>Jaime Kristene Twitter</a></h2><ul><li><a class='rsswidget' href='http://twitter.com/jaimekristene/statuses/10795271242' title='jaimekristene: @bella_kella They hit the craft world about 6 months ago, I guess it's coming from US / Europe's autumn.'>jaimekristene: @bella_kella They hit the craft world about 6 months ago, I guess it's coming from US / Europe's autumn.</a> <span class="rss-date">March 21, 2010</span></li><li><a class='rsswidget' href='http://twitter.com/jaimekristene/statuses/10793837995' title='jaimekristene: New strong seedlings up in the pea patch, parsnips and swedes coming up too.
